Bug Description

Just upgraded to 12.04 from 10.04 a few days ago. Am able to print test pages, web forms, and Libre Office documents but when I try to print a .pdf opened with Evince, the document goes into the print queue and stays there with a status of "stopped." The only thing that I can do at that point is to cancel the document, the only other options available are "reprint" which puts it right back in the same state, and "retrieve" which saves the file to disk. I can't say with 100% certainty that I was able to print .pdfs from 10.04 but I can't imagine that I was using that distro for several years without having the occasion to do so at least once.

Thank you for using Ubuntu and filing a bug. Are you trying to print by using 'Print Preview' first or by simply using 'Print'? There is a known bug with using 'Print Preview' (bug #994243).

Changed in evince (Ubuntu):
assignee: nobody → Jamie Strandboge (jdstrand)
status: New → Incomplete

Just tried it again as I was not certain whether I had tried preview or not. Also used a different .pdf file than previously. Did not select print preview, just went straight to print, the document is in my print queue with status of "stopped."

More information that may be useful: the document has a size of "US Letter, Portrait (8.49 × 10.99 inch)" when I view properties in evince window, but when I check print job attributes in the queue it says "PageSize Custom" the other thing that seems like it might have information that would be useful to figuring out what's going on is that it says "job-printer-state-message /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"

I would give the whole text of the print job attributes but I can't text select on that window.

Let me know if you think any more info would be helpful or if you want me to try anything

I also tried printing a .pdf that I know I had printed previously (it was one that I generated myself from OpenOffice.org and had posted on my website back when I had one) and saw the same behavior so it seems pretty likely that it is not a problem with the files.

Ok, this should not be apparmor then. I'm not sure what it is, but I have seen this happen when my network printer accessed via local CUPS got disabled, which can sometimes happen when printing to a printer that cannot be seen on the network. I suggest open the Printers dialog, right clicking on the printer and making sure it is enabled.

printer is directly connected to PC by USB and in fact I do not have a home network set up at this time - I did once upon a time and I was able to print to the same printer connected to a different (Windows) PC, then moved it directly to this one and it still worked fine, now it works with all apps (that I have tried so far) except Evince

Since my upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 .pdf files printed with evince cause my network-connected HP4000 (Postscript-Printer connected to Server) to fail printing.
The printer shows:
ERROR:
invalidaccess
OFFENDING COMMAND:
filter
STACK:
/SubFileDecode
endstream
0
--nostringval--
--nostringval--
11
false

It looks a bit like a postscript conversion error.
Printing the same document from Adobe Acrobat reader works fine.

affects: evince (Ubuntu) → cups (Ubuntu)

I'm having a similar problem, and I'm quite sure it's related to evince (or one of the filters used by evince?). I've just upgraded to 12.04.

My printer is an Epson Style NX215, which works superbly in Linux I might add -- so I did not need any custom drivers installed/compiled from third party web sites as with previous printers.

After the upgrade, I removed it and added it again. Print page works fine, I can print from Firefox, I can print a PDF from the command line using lpr.

Evince won't let me print just the first page of my pdf. If I print the entire thing, it works.

I'm attaching the print errors given through after following the diagnosis wizard thing.

Ah.. so my problem must be related to bug #994243 because the print preview also doen't work -- but only when I try to print *some* of the pages (e.g. only page 1). If I do a print preview over the whole document, works.

Has Adobe Reader been included in the 12.04 repositories yet? I'm having trouble installing from Adobe's web site and can't seem to find it in Synaptic. Starting to get really frustrated and disappointed in myself for forcing the upgrade to 12.04. this is starting to become a big deal as more than half the files I need to print (shipping labels etc.) are .pdf files.

I am unable to print PDFs. It does not seem to be a generalized problem, because I can print just fine from other file types. My supervisor also runs Ubuntu, and uses the same printer from his laptop, but does not seem to have any problem printing PDFs.

I am also experiencing it just recently. Have been using Ubuntu since 9.04. It works fine. With Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04 first it takes quite some time for Document View to show up. Most unwanted, is that it won't print more than 1 pages. Print one page, fine. Print a file with more than one page, Document Viewer collapsed or nothing happen.

I upgarde to HPLIP 3.13.5, now even document viewer collap when we try to print anything.

I had to switch to a non-cups driver as a workaround.

Ok, that only worked for a few printings, then it stopped working again with the non-cups drivers.

I've been on 12.04 for over a year, and have had no previous problem. Suddenly, I am not able to print pdfs from Evince. It was not a recent upgrade for me.

I found MY problem: I had configured the print dialogue settings for label printing on our label printer. Somehow that setting ended up on my regular printer. I'm not sure if the setting "carried over" to the other printer, or if I had accidentally set another printer to my custom label printer size.

Is the duplicate correct? It doesn't mention printing or evince.
