Bug Description

When I use an attached PPD encoded in JIS83-RKSJ (Shift JIS Japanese; traditional Japanese PPD encoding), most of applications including CUPS Web UI, system-config-printer or gtk-print can't display item names. See attached screenshot of CUPS Web UI and SCP.

This bug is reproduced in Oneiric and Precise both, but I haven't tried older version or other distros yet.

It seems upstream bug but I can't find STR on CUPS.BUGS.

In addition, CUPS and related modules can handle generic (multilingual) PPD right; actually EPSON PX-503A by EPSON installed via S-C-P automatic download install.

I tried 10.04 LTS (uses CUPS 1.4.3-1) and it worked fine, so it seems upstream bug. I report the issue in CUPS.BUGS:

From upstream report: "Shift-JIS support was re-added in CUPS 1.5.2" which means that this bug is fixed in Precise. Thanks for the report and please feel to report any other other issues that you may have with Ubuntu.

Changed in cups (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Fix Released
