Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

Bug in both Jaunty and Karmic

CUPS version 1.3.9-17ubuntu3.2 (Jaunty)

When i try to print at my school, the file isn't send to the printer

I added the printer as an Internet Printing Protocol (https) with the following url:
https://po.fontys.nl:443/printers/<printername>/.printer

When i go to cups 'webpage' (http://localhost:631/) i see the following error:
Error: "Printing: Printer does not support IPP/1.1, trying IPP/1.0..."

Please run the following command on a terminal for some useful printing related debugging information:
apport-collect -p cups 444752

Also attach your cups_error log with debugging enabled after trying to print, as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#CUPS%20error_log

In Karmic i cant add any printer anymore, so i cant test there. Ill look if there is already an bug report for it. In Jaunty i got an "/usr/lib/cups/backend/https failed" error.

Here is an error log of my Karmic installation.

btw. is there an option in GUI for connecting to IPP(HTTP). In Jaunty there was an option, but is removed in Karmic

Ronnie,
The apport-collect information attached is incomplete, did something go wrong here?
If it does not work please attach the output of the printingbug info script as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript (it should install without problems on Karmic and collects the same information as apport-collect).

The server simply does not accept your print job. All preparation and filtering on the client is OK.

What kind of server is po.fontys.nl? Is it a CUPS server (Linux, Mac OS X, ...), a Windows server, or a network-connected printer? Is the server configured correctly to allow your computer to access the printer? If the server is a printer, can you access it by setting up a queue using the socket or dnssd backend?

can you run

nmap -PN po.fontys.nl

and post the output here? Install nmap if it is not installed on your machine.

The printer server is probably an Windows server, but it can be a network-connected computer too. If you want to know, ill ask the helpdesk at school

How can i do this:

I tried printing from a Windows installation in Virtualbox and it worked perfectly with my username and password. The server should thus work fine (at least for windows systems)

Adding '?waitjob=false&waitprinter=false' to the end of the printer url seems to work. I can print now

Looks like the server is accepting the job, but wont send a response.

There is one other bug for me now, the filename is always 'unknown'. Can this be resolved?

Hello Ronnie,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups and printing. You made this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu has been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know, and in the current version, run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu better.
