Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

Printing is not working for my HP LaserJet p1005. It is automatically detected when I connect it (via USB), and the foo2xqx driver is selected by default. When I try to print a test page, it appears to go through correctly in the printer configuration tool - the Printer State goes to Processing, the job shows up in the queue, and appears to finish after a few seconds. Unfortunately, nothing ever happens on the actual printer. No paper is fed through, and the data light never flashes. With the hpijs driver, when I try to print a test page, the status goes to Processing, the job shows up in the queue, but then the printer state goes to 'Idle - /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomaitc-rip failed', and the job status goes to 'Stopped' in the queue.

The generic CUPS-PDF printer does not work either. When I try to print a test page, the printer state goes to 'Idle - /usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf failed'.

Ok, I launched hp-setup manually, installed the driver,
and now it prints.

amirh, what was missing was HP's proprietary plugin, hp-setup has installed it. To only install the plugin without repeating the printer setup, do "hp-plugin -i".

saiahwarnke, please also try to run "hp-plugin -i".

Till, HP's proprietary plugin was installed before I ran hp-setup(actually, I'm pretty sure that the auto-tool launched hp-setup as I got the same wizard),
I'm not sure what was wrong, but something was wrong with the default installation process (as it just didn't print).
I can try to reproduce the problem if you need some specific details...

saiahwarnke, I had a look into your error_log and most jobs for the LJ P1005 did not show any error in the logging, all processes closed successfully, nothing errored out, crashed, or got killed by you. Only on the first job it seems that the backend was hanging and you have killed the job. For me it looks like that there is a bad interference between the foo2xqx driver (from the foo2zjs package) and the hp CUPS backend (from the HPLIP package).

So please try the following (works only on Karmic, use life CD if you do not have Karmic installed):

- Do a complete update of your system (or the life system).

- Run system-config-printer and create a new print queue by clicking the "New" button.

- Choose your printer, but click on "Connection" on the right. Switch to "USB" (not "HP Printer").

- Follow the next steps, make sure to choose the foo2xqx driver (not HPIJS or HPLIP).

Can you print through this queue?
