Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

Given:
A workstation running Intrepid
A server running Intrepid, with 4 shared printers.

The workstation is showing all printers shared from the server twice. The first time the name shown in e.g. system-config-printers is just the name of the printer (e.g. "Lexmark"), but the printer's device file is "file:/dev/null".

The second printer shows the fully qualified name of the printer (e.g. "<email address hidden>") with the correct device node (e.g. "ipp://server.example.com:631/printers/Lexmark").

Printing to the first device (which, BTW, is the one that seems to always be selected) doesn't work (indeed, the job hangs forever until canceled).

Printing to the second device works.

These printers are NOT in the workstation's local configuration files.

I had a similar problem and as a workaround I stopped cups service, removed /var/cache/cups/remote.cache, and restarted cups.
Obviously a caching mechanism done by cups but the changes I made to the print server were over a day old -Far too long to be holding onto in cache...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

I have this bug too.
Kubuntu 12.04 64-bit.

HP Photosmart 6510.

Shows up twice (in http://localhost:631/printers/):

Photosmart_6510
Photosmart_6510_series

Removing the one not marked as default results in removal of both.

Cups version 1.5.3-0ubuntu4

Please let me now if more information is needed

Hello Wowbagger,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups and printing. You made this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu has been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know, and in the current version, run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu better.
