Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

My printer is on another computer and I print to it using IPP. Both systems are ubuntu systems running cups servers. When the computer with the printer is powered down and I try to print from a Gnome application, the program hangs for 1-3 minutes before displaying the print dialog. If the external print server is on the print dialog appears immediately.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10, the external server is running 8.04, and cups 1.3.9-2ubuntu6.1

This happend in jaunty also if the printer is unreacheable ( connected to a diffferent network ), hangs for more than a minute, and then shows the list of printers...

This bug is very annoying i think you should consider the importance

Same issue here (I reported a duplicate). I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on both computers, and the printer is shared using samba. I also tried printing from a KDE application (Digikam) on Ubuntu and get the same thing. There is also no indication in either print dialog that the printer is offline.

I just noticed that selecting another, available (local) printer as the default cups printer inside the printer manager seems to reduce the delay.
This is of course no solution - but perhaps a temporary workaround.
(both pc's running Jaunty 9.04)

The application's print dialogs should access the CUPS asynchronously showing something like "Loading printer list ..." until they get the answer from the server and always with active "Cancel" button so that one can close the printing dialog at any time when CUPS does not answer.

Lars, can you implement this in the Common Printing Dialog?

Maybe a slightly different bug, but I see a very similar issue in libreoffice: I have cups configured for the printers at work. When I open a presentation at home (does not happen very often), libreoffice freezes for 2-3 minutes when opening (so not even a print-dialog involved!), after which it works correctly. Commenting the line 'ServerName cupserver.mywork.com' in /etc/cups/client.conf, libreoffice opens instantly. I learned this the hard way when I was away on a conference and had to update my presentation 2 hours before my talk. Took me some stressful minutes and a packet-sniffer before I found the problem :).

I had a similar issue. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on the two PCs, and the printer is shared utilizing samba. I likewise took a stab at printing from a KDE application on Ubuntu and get a similar thing. I have managed this problem with help of link https://www.emailcustomercareservice.com/blog/fix-gmail-error-007/ and my problem gets resolved. You can also visit the link to resolve the issue.
