Bug Description

Using Intrepid on a AMD64 laptop, trying to get a stable connection to a Brother HL-5350N through a Linksys router. Below is a printer troubleshoot report. I do not know the command line. When I get the message Printer May Not Be Connected, I've deleted the printer, and reinstalled. Then I can print for a while until the next time I loose the printer connection.
Thank you, Doug

Changed to Confirmed and setting release blocker for Jaunty as printing is a critical task.

Other users on Jaunty besides myself are also experiencing this problem, refer:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6935889

This is also occuring on Jaunty where On Jaunty. When trying to setup my samsung laser printer, the device appeared to correctly be identified and the appropriate driver installed. Users are able to change device preferences. However when actually trying to print, the job will stall at processing and the error message "(Printer Name) May Not Be Connected is displayed. No printing will occur.

I have run the apport sudo ubuntu-bug cups to hopefully get releated info to the devs for fixing.

From the info provided below, its clear that the system knows the device is on USB.

The original bug report is about a network printer. How is the issue you're reporting related?

My USB printer works fine with jaunty. Incompatibility with a particular printer model is not a release blocker.

Upon Steve's request, I have created a separate bug, #348316, which is symptomatically similar but not involving network printing configurations. All work on USB printing should occur there.

dsiddens, your print queue was full of jobs, therefore your test job did not get processed.

Can you delete all the jobs from the queue (you can alternatively do "cancel -a" on the command line) and also turn off and turn on the router and the printer and then try the troubleshooting wizard again? Make also sure to use the troubleshooting wizard correctly. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems for more info.

This is probably unrelated, but...
I was unable to print to a network attached ML-2510 (through a PS-121 v2), and found the current bug.
But then I decided to check the properties to see if something changed with the upgrade, and I noticed there was a newer print-driver available in the database. I changed to the recommended one(it had "Splix" or something in it), and then everything seemed to work fine. Another oddity is that jaunty seemed to auto-add another printer profile for the same printer; that one did not work.

I have discovered what I guess is a "work around". In System>Administration>Printing, I right click on the printer icon and select Properties. Under Device URI, I click "Change". After a period of waiting, the computer seems to set a new URI and then all is well... for a while. What is happening in the meanwhile that causes the printer to become non-op, I don't know.

I have successfully installed a Cannon iP5200 printer from this computer with Ubuntu 7.04, 7.10, 8.04, and 8.10 through a router which is also connected to an XP machine. Upgrading to 9.04, I am having no luck. It seems to install, and when I do the "test page" it processed to 7% and brings up a message saying "printer possibly not connected, cannot connect". There is no response from the printer.
