Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

Whenever I try to print a photo at high quality, my PC grinds to a halt for 10mins before the printer finally kicks into action. Top shows pdftoraster eating CPU and memory, 900MB+ on a 1GB system! I have an Epson R300 Photo printer. I printed a 2280x3380 (full A4) photo from GIMP and selected "Super Photo" quality.

Also, if I select "Best" then it doesn't print at all (the diagnostic tool indicates that pdftoraster crashed).

I didn't print anything in high quality yet, but I tried bootchart and noticed pdftoraster runs at least 2s while the computer is booting. Another 2-3s it is I/O waiting.
Is this normal?

I confirm the bug,
Yesterday I wanted to print a simple pdf. My printer is old (epson stylus 600) so I asked for the best quality. pdftoraster took more than 400MB and it took 30 minutes to print the page (I only have 512MB of ram...)

Even when reducing quality, it consume a lot of memory (~200MB/page in normal quality)

I believe this bug is the same as http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12769 .

Short summary: there's a bug in poppler (the pdf library). The fix is in git, but not in any released version yet.
