Bug Description

I experience consistent printing problems using Intrepid (up-to-date with all updates). As a test, after installing the morning's updates to my installation (22/09/08), I sent the first 2 pages of this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.searchtext=Printing&orderby=-datecreated&search=Search&field.status%3Alist=NEW&field.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITH_RESPONSE&field.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITHOUT_RESPONSE&field.status%3Alist=CONFIRMED&field.status%3Alist=TRIAGED&field.status%3Alist=INPROGRESS&field.status%3Alist=FIXCOMMITTED&field.assignee=&field.bug_reporter=&field.omit_dupes=on&field.has_patch=&field.has_no_package=

to my LAN attached Konica Minolta 2530DL Colour Laser, from within Firefox.

The print job seems to be processed just fine. But at the printer I have the following sequence:

* The First Page to come out is blank,
* the LCD console on the printer reports: "Error: Video Underrun"
* Then the first proper page appears (look OK)
* The second page to appear is corrupted; the printed text gets wrapped horizontally so some of the right hand side text is printed over the top of the left hand side text.

I saw no errors in /var/log/cups/error.log or anything other than successful in either page.log or access.log (attached for reference).

The initial auto detection and configuration of the printer seemingly worked fine.

From the printer configuration dialogue:

Device URI: ipp://10.0.0.3:631/ipp.cgi
Make and Model: KONICA MINOLTA magicolor 2530 DL Foomatic/foo2lava (recommended)

Similar printing errors happen from whatever source I have tried, e.g. Adobe Acrobat Reader, OOo, Envince.

This printer does, and has since since I purchased it, work perfectly in Gutsy and Hardy (My other PCs have Hardy and use this printer daily).

Thank you for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Can you run the script referenced at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript to gather more information. Also, are you still seeing this problem? cups 1.3.8-11ubuntu2 was uploaded on 2008/09/25 which fixed some issues with formatting.

Till, can you take a look at this?

OK - I ran a couple of test prints from Intrepid and it is certainly much better :-)

If, however I try to print the same contents (select pages 1-2 in the print dialogue) of the Firefox browser from the URL I posted in the original report, I do not get any errors on the printer, it does not create a first blank page, but, the second page is still corrupted with the "wrapped text" issue.

I also printed a couple of pages of a manual from Envince twice. The first time round the print output itself was fine, but I think I got an extra blank page so I tried again. The second time it wouldn't print at all - an error dialogue popped up saying (IIRC) "Failed to Print: Too many printing errors" or something similar. Printing the same pages from within Adobe Acrobat Reader was perfectly fine however.

So, my conclusion is that it seems a great deal improved from the last time I tried but I am not sure if it is completely fixed - or if the remaining problems are more to do with the content or rendering applications. The URL test especially; as the printed output has exactly the same errors as in my original post I wonder if there is a bug in Firefox or something...

I have attached the output of printingbuginfo.

Thanks for looking into this and I hope all this is of some help.

Update:

My Intrepid build is up-to-date as of yesterday.

Printing from Firefox seems OK as long as the page size is set correctly. It defaults to US Letter even though all other settings are for the UK (en_GB etc..). If I do not chnage the page size in Firefox the print job gets sent to the printer but the printer LCD shows, very briefly the following messages:

processing
cancelling job.

This all happens within a second or two and no pages are actually printed. If I set the page size to A4 and try again, from Firefox, it prints fine.

From other applications, I am having this problem. Printing from within OOo or Acrobat Reader, or Envince does not work. I get the same error as above. The job is queued, transmitted and received by the printer, but the job is almost immediately cancelled.

Strange.

Is there a user setting in your ~/.cups/lpoptions that overrides the paper size?

Nope:

Default KM2530DL PageSize=A4

I have managed to get more consistent printing on my device but I had to break the package manager to do it :-(

Following the suggestion in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=346929 has allowed me to print quite well (I do get extra page feeds sometimes but nothing else seems busted printing-wise) but every time I do an update the update manager barfs about the KM2530DL package at the end of the update process. Although the updates themselves are applied OK and it all seems to work.

To me this looks like a problem with the foo2lava driver.
Can you attach a complete cups error_log with the foo2lava driver after trying to print as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#cupserrorlog
Your cups-logs.tar.gz file has a cups error_log of 0 bytes.

HI sorry for the long delay in replying. I am now running Jaunty and with the default install the KM2530DL prints a test page OK, but trying to print from FF or OOo the job gets sent but nothing comes out of the printer.

I have attached the error_log and troubleshoot.txt.

Thanks,

Alan

OK - Another short update. I went back to the forum article (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=346929) and did the following.

Downloaded the driver from Konica Minolta's web site.
Rather than installing the RPM, I extracted it (rpm2cpio ../magicolor2530DL-2.0.0-1.i386.rpm | cpio -dimv)
All files are installed into /usr/share or /usr/lib . I simply copied the files into /usr using

    alord@Lobsang:/usr$ sudo cp -av /home/alord/Desktop/MG/usr/* .

I then tried to install the printer via the System->Administration->Printing->New->Printer dialogue but it failed at the final hurdle with:

"There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'server-error-internal-error'.".

However, installing the printer via the cups interface at localhost:631/ according to the thread above worked fine. I can print using FF and OOo. And hopefully by not installing a deb I won't get any more dpkg errors.

But still, it would be nice if I didn't have to resort to these kind of hacks. Hope this helps in the diagnosis. Just in case, I have attached the magicolor driver file.

Hi Alan,

Do you still have this printer?
Jaunty is no longer supported, please upgrade to a supported release preferably Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or higher.
Do you still have the problem with the foo2lava driver?

Thanks,
Pascal
