Bug Description

I need step-by-step and detailed instructions on how to install my Brother MFC-7340 printer/scanner/fax machine onto my computer, which is running Ubuntu 12.04 something, something LTS operating system. I believe the Ubuntu version that is running on my computer is a "deb" type and not an "rpm," which appears to make a difference to Brother, Incorporated. How can I determine definitively the O/S on my computer? More importantly and as already mentioned, I need to know how-that is, what steps and what line code(s) to type into the terminal box on my computer to install the aforementioned Brother MFC-7340 printer/scanner/fax. As an aside, when I click on either the 'network' or 'computer' drop down box, I do not see my Brother MFC-7340 printer/scanner/fax listed anywhere on that drop down box, even though I have, in the past, used this same network map to identify and to connect my Ubuntu O/S to my mobile device that I had, in the past, connected to my computer running the Ubuntu O/S via a USB cable. Also, the aforementioned printer will not be connected to the same USB port as the mobile device(s) at any time(s).

Does anyone know how to solve the connection problem between my printer and my computer? And, yes, for those who might suggest it, I did check to ensure that the USB cable is correctly attached to both the back of my computer and the corresponding printer. Please help!

This was the place to file bugs against the ubuntu.com website content... not support for Ubuntu.

You would be better served going to our forum or askubuntu.

I hope you get your printer working.

Don, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems.
Please also run, in a terminal window"apport-collect -p cups 1604623"

affects: ubuntu → cups (Ubuntu)

Hello Don,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups. You made this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu has been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know, and in the current version, run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu better.
