can't print to network printer

I have an HP LaserJet 1022 connected to dd-wrt. I can telnet to port 9100, but when I try to print nothing happens. When I watch the print queue with system-config-printer, it seems like it is working but nothing happens.

I disabled cups app-armor, just in case but it didn't help.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I noticed that if I curl router:9100 (that's where the dd-wrt printer daemon listens) then the printer will print the HTTP request.

The printer also works fine when connected to a computer via USB.
