Bug Description

Printing (as well PDF from KPDF as all other programs like OpenOffice) was working.

---edit---
Ubuntu 8.04 (64 bit) on amd64
good old USB printer C-64 epson stylus
ii cups-pdf 2.4.6-4ubuntu2
---------

It suddenly stoped working, probably after my recent upgrade.

Printing PDFs (ie from KPDF) do not work - the icon of printer (KDE) appears and dissapears in a moment, nothing gets printed.

Other documents (say from OpenOffice directly) still work.

After issuing a print of a PDF, i got in dmesg:

[39291.980193] audit(1218633214.255:3): type=1503 operation="capable" name="dac_override" pid=19016 profile="/usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf" namespace="default"
[39291.980204] audit(1218633214.255:4): type=1503 operation="capable" name="dac_read_search" pid=19016 profile="/usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf" namespace="default"

and similar.

I never changed anything in default AppArmor configuration, or did any steps related to it, all is default (same for CUPS).

I disabled AppArmor,
  sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor stop
but the problem remained (only now without this info in dmesg).

Logs:

/var/log/cups/error_log

I don't know, is it related perhaps to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cupsys/+bug/147551 but as I said, it seems disabling AppArmor did not help.

If you are printing to a real printer, you are not using cups-pdf. cups-pdf is a "pseudo printer" for printing to a pdf file.

I would like to file a bug report. It looks like this one, so I will attach it to this.

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 to new machine.
Installed cups pdf printer.
Can't print PDFs. Printer queue reports failure, but gives no other help.
Can't find any other help in application. Can't see any options in printer property that help.
Ran trouble shooter. Will attach the report.

Through Google, found that cups pdf requires user to have a folder called PDF in their home folder. It has to be in caps.

My suggestion are:
1) to amend the cups pdf package so that it saves pdfs by default in the home folder
2) to have a clear option in the printer properties so that the user can specify another folder in which to save pdfs
3) to report to the user that the specified folder is not found, rather than just falling over

If you can't do the above, then when installing, the installation script should create the required PDF folder if it is not there already.

Thanks to everyone at Ubuntu and Debian and related projects for getting this far.

Frank
