Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups-pdf

Setting up cups-pdf (2.4.7-3ubuntu1) ...
Password for root on localhost?

Does it mean the actual root password? (This installation doesn't have one and even if it did I wouldn't give it to a postinst script.) Or does it mean a new password for something? If so, what?

Furthermore, this interactively blocks the upgrade, which it definitely shouldn't.

In this case, pressing Enter seems to allow it to continue.

This is a result of the following line in the postinst script:

  lpadmin -h localhost -p $queue -E -v cups-pdf:/ -m lsb/usr/cups-pdf/PostscriptColor.ppd -o printer-is-shared=no -o PageSize=$size 2>/dev/null || :

From the lpadmin manpage:

  COMPATIBILITY
    Unlike the System V printing system, CUPS allows printer names to contain any printable character except
    SPACE, TAB, "/", or "#". Also, printer and class names are not case-sensitive. Finally, the CUPS version
    of lpadmin may ask the user for an access password depending on the printing system configuration. This
    differs from the System V version which requires the root user to execute this command.

What a bummer.

If lpadmin requires interaction under certain circumstances, we either need to avoid those circumstances in maintainer scripts, or not use it in maintainer scripts.

I just installed cups-pdf on Intrepid and did not experience this. Is this still an issue for you in Jaunty or Intrepid?

Please note that there's a backport of 2.5.0-12 for Hardy in my PPA for those who need to check whether this still applies to recent packages.
