Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups-pdf

When I print out a form to cups-pdf in gutsy the form prints to the extent of the pdf page and then after that if we send that pdf to a printer it will clip the pages. However if i print this page directly to the printer it prints fine.

This is noticeable when you print a webpage to pdf like the welcome to ubuntu page when you first start firefox . If you look at the pdf it will have the title, location and date. if you then in turn print this page to a printer none of that will be on there as it will be clipped off. TIA for the help.

This is an old bug report, but I also ran into this issue. The cups-pdf package allows CUPS to directly have a pdf printer. When I installed it, it provides a ppd file (/etc/cups/ppd) with the margins settings all the way to the edge of the paper with the code

*ImageableArea Letter/US Letter: "0 0 612 792"

I looked at my laser printer and it had

*ImageableArea Letter/US Letter: "18 12 594 780"

so then I just changed the cups-pdf ppd file to that, and the new print outs are within the margins.

This is not a bug.

The imageable size of the CUPS-PDF "printer" indeed is 100% of the intended paper size, because this printer doesn't have any physical restriction for its usable area. By comparison, your laser printer can only print where its toner drum runs, which is an area about 1cm away from the paper's edge, thus it correctly has a smaller imageable area.

The real solution here is to format the layout inside the application. For instance, if you're using OpenOffice, define margins for your document in the Format/Page... preferences.
