Bug Description

As reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-pdf/+bug/487629, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-pdf/+bug/789311 and http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=617468 in an older version the cups-pdf installation has become broken.

The only mention fix is to purge and reinstall the package:
        dpkg --purge cups-pdf ; apt-get install cups-pdf

The accidentally broken installation isn't repaired by any new versions of cups-pdf or cups.

So this bug report should stay open to give users a chance to find the right solution easily.

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 13.10. Cups-pdf will only print a single, blank page regardless of the number of pages, or waht application is being printed from. I did the following from above:
 dpkg --purge cups-pdf ; apt-get install cups-pdf
but that did not fix the issue. Reinstall didn't help.

I can also confirm the problem on Saucy. I could trace the problem back to the file /var/spool/cups-pdf/SPOOL/cups2pdf-$PID which is handed over to gs. It is only one byte long an contains "0x0A".

I'm sure it worked at one point for me. Because I have pdf files in the folder that I had set up. Doesn't work anymore.

No errors in error log.

* Sometimes prints just a blank page called cups-pdf_log.pdf
* Sometimes prints a pdf that I can't open.
* Sometimes does nothing all.

Does this issue still affect cups-pdf 3.0.1 packages?

This report seems to involve upgrading from an older release that used the old PPD file. The package's maintainer scripts do not attempt to automatically change the PPD to the new one. This must be done manually as per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-pdf/+bug/1236120/comments/12
