Have you spoken with the Debian maintainer about co-maintaining it in Debian? In general we prefer to not differ too much if possible, so if the Debian package is using CDBS, we should probably be doing the same. If 1.4 can run with an 8 line Debhelper file, maybe the Debian maintain would consider switching?
Debian has an RC bug for the erlang issue, so it needs to be solve one way or another: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=714263
If you have a patch for the Debian bug for erlang16b + 1.2.x, that could probably get sponsored pretty easily.
An upgrade to 1.4.x probably just needs a conversation with the Debian maintainer.
