package coreutils 8.25-2ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: package coreutils is not ready for configuration cannot configure (current status 'half-installed')

version: Ubuntu 16.04.2
Pressing "ubuntu software" icon there are updates that cannot be installed (the progress bar hangs after a time). I tried "sudo apt-get update" but it does not update the packages.
