Bug Description

Binary package hint: sysvinit

Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release: 10.04

When requesting shutting down or restarting the system from the graphics interface, the command executed by the system is log off instead. Normally, I expect to power off the system when giving the shutdown command and to reboot the system when giving the restart command. But I see only the login window, no shutdown, no restart.

Is this happening all the time or just occasionally? Do you have the option to suspend/hibernate and are things like disk mounting working correctly? (i suspect that your symptoms might be a side-effect of bug 544139)

@Chris, I think you are right.

I have had this problem occurring occasionally since upgrading from Karmic to Lucid. If I click shutdown or restart on the graphics interface, it logs me out. Trying again at the bottom of the log-in screen does not work either, neither does logging back in and trying graphical shut down again. The only thing that works is shutting down from the command line.

There are also occasional problems mounting other disc partitions where I am confronted with "Unable to mount [partition name] Not authorized" When this happens, I have noticed that the option to hibernate/suspend is missing from my power button menu.

this bug was in Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10 and I have this "log off only" issue in Ubuntu 13.04 too.
Sometimes it works fine and sometimes system is log off only.
