This bug originated from the line in /var/lib/dpkg/info/console-setup.config: eval: line 1295: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `"'
which evaluates the result of the `locale` command. Because of my changes to /etc/default/locale to get norwegian measurment, papersize etc working without using norwegian language for menus etc, some lines there did not return a correct syntax. This obviously broke the entire update process! I was not able to start X afterwards, until I found the cause, corrected /etc/default/locale and completed the upgrade with apt-get install console-setup and apt-get dist-upgrade.

Not sure if this was sufficient, though, because I still get some errors on boot time, but not sure if they are related:

fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.ntfs for /dev/sda1
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16
dosfsck 3.0.3, 18 May 2009, FAT32, LFN
