Wrong colors in console

I'm not 100% certain this is the right package to file this against, it could also be the kernel, or ????, but here it is:

After having great success testing Karmic on my main laptop, I installed it on an extra laptop using the most recent RC iso.

Now, this machine has funky colors on the virtual consoles. Most colors typically shown in the colorized 'ls' output are now just white and grey. In aptitude, the blues are right, but download progress bars are a shade of black against a slightly different shade of black.

In a terminal window or SSH from my other machine, colors are fine. I've no idea where to start on this one.

I should mention that this is a Radeon Mobility M6 LY graphics chip, according to lspci.
