Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

I did "sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup" for set layout switching key and choose right font for my locale (Caps Lock, Terminus, Russian), but after reboot tty consoles don't use my settings. So, I switch off splash in /boot/grub/menu.lst and now tty consoles use my settings.

Ubuntu 8.10 Beta i386
Nvidia FX5200 and nvdia-glx-173 drivers

Thank you for your time.

I had a similar problem with keymap layout switching to US (both tty consoles and gnomes apps), right after a fresh install of intrepid.

What I did :

 - fresh install of intrepid (fresh formatted / partition, /home partition unchanged)

 => keyboard mapping seems ok

 - install the binary nvidia driver (the recommended version)
 - fiddle with nvidia-settings
 - restart X

=> keyboard behavior changes : trying to enter a pipe (need to presse AltGr + 2 on a swiss french keyboard CH_fr) results in a newline in both gnome terminal and tty. Others 'alternate' chars behave identically.

 - remove the binary nvidia driver
 - reboot

=> keyboard is again fully functionnal

I did not try to reproduce this behavior, though. So at first sight it could be related to the nvidia driver.

I can confirm this with nvidia-glx-177.80.

After updating from 8.04 to 8.10 last night, I am since struggling to get Compiz back. Regarding the problem you described I just had to find out that after loading the GLX extensions not only Compiz does still not want to run, but also my keymap is messed up:

Xorg.0.log shows that the keymap cannot be compiled (why ever?) and my arrow keys don't work, super (windows key) doesn't work, the whole block with insert, delete, home, end, pgup, pgdown doesn't work...

Unloading nvidia-glx and restarting Xorg does the trick for the keyboard at least. :(

Thanks for replies :)

But to be clear: I filed this bug report only about keymap-settings issue in tty consoles, cause keyboard in X11 works perfectly (I don't have any keyboard configuration in xorg.conf - I use Gnome's "Keyboard Setting" and it works) and I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10.

The problem is that if you have Splash on (and possibly Nvidia restricted video driver installed) during system boot tty consoles doesn't load keymap-settings and I can't see non latin letters - just white squares.

There are 2 workarounds:
 - login in tty console and run "sudo /etc/init.d/console-setup restart" - that will restart all tty consoles and load keymap settings;
 - switch off Splash in /boot/grub/menu.lst

This is almost certainly bug 130444, now fixed. (The separate X keymap problems people reported are definitely nothing to do with usplash, and should likely be filed as *separate* bugs per reporter, with as much information as possible, against some X package; you could start with xkeyboard-config.)
