Wammu looks like the solution for backup. By some technical reason I do not know, however, launchpad does not allow filing it against wammu.

To get the degree of comfort expected by the average user, this would also require auto-detection and auto-opening of either an evolution syncing tool or wammu. Which package would be responsible for that?

I think conduit is the right package for synchronization stuff.
