This is happening to many users & causing no small amount of confusion. The re-loading is unexpected & can take some time so many users will do a forced log out. Upon logging in the are surprised to see no unity launcher & panel. ( not unexpected because the unity plugin is not default enabled in the "default" profile. On occasion the re-loading can also hang.
The change in profiles is reflected in a new entry in ~/.config/compiz-1/compizconfig/config -

[general_ubuntu]
profile =

There is no visible 'unity' profile available in ccsm > Preferences so the fact that it can be added & the user returned to the unity profile is lost on most users. Plus adding it only creates a blank profile line & gibberish in the dropdown.
(ironically if one did add the unity profile & then opened the Profile dropdown they again be auto switched right back to the "Default" profile
The other method to return to using the unity profile , deleting or editing the above entry in the config file is equally obscure.

This is leading many users to go into unity-2d to enable the unity plugin which does work because now, instead of using the unity profile in the Ubuntu session, they are using the Default profile. The end result is many users are now using the "Default" profile in an Ubuntu session.

Now maybe users shouldn't be opening Preferences in the !st. place, but it's there & quite visible

Also. under some other circumstances while in ccsm, users are also switched to the "Default" profile with the same results.
The whole thing seems quite messy atm
