Hi Herman

Is this reproducible?
If so, which are the steps to crash it?

Which video card and driver do you have?

Thanks

About reproducibility: this was the first time that it happened. I'll give
feedback the next time that it happens.

VideoCard: 256MB Nvidia GeForce 7300LE TurboCache graphics card
Driver: nvidia-glx 9755

It is reproducible: new updates were available. After clicking the "install
updates" button the screen froze. The system became accessible after hitting
ctrl alt bckspc. No bug report was created.

Hello,
What if gksudo and its appearance effect were responsible ?
Please try in a terminal :
gksudo gedit
(This will launch gedit as root.)
