Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

When running a remote IRC session (to chiark), I get various sorts of redraw and scrolling problems: the most obvious is that text entered at the bottom line stays there rather than being cleared when you hit return, and that updates of the window cause the scroll-bar to move so that it's no longer at the bottom.

Thank you for your bug, what version of Ubuntu do you use?

I'm using Feisty, and the problem's still there in updates as of the evening of 30th March.

If it's an X-server issue then it might be relevant that I'm using Intel G965 graphics.

I wonder whether it's a termcap issue; is gnome-terminal supposed to emulate TERM=xterm? I'm using, as you see from the screencap, whatever the default font in Feisty's gnome-terminal is; the server which I'm connected to when I have this trouble is a debian box with /etc/termcap
# Version 10.2.7
# $Date: 1999/03/10 15:53:04 $

[I don't know the command to figure out which package-name and version that /etc/termcap came from; /etc/debian-version is 3.1 if that helps]

I have reproduced this with a feisty install made from the i386 d-i rc cd 20070415 on my main testbed system. If there's any other information you'd like please let me know.

The client is feisty's gnome-terminal as above, with ssh to chiark.greenend.org.uk (a very very old Debian install currently running sarge) with inside that a copy of ircII.

NB that this is definitely not, or at least not solely, a termcap problem. Observe in Tom's screenshot that the display is not a sane representation of any character grid. Also, when other windows are moved over the faulty gnome-terminal, and then away, the display refresh thereby caused fixes the corruption.

It could well be. It's difficult to know for sure. The symptoms seem
very similar but I'm reluctant to call every bug with similar symptoms
a dupe :-).

To be honest, if my graphics didn't work properly otherwise I would
suspect an X server bug.

Ian.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance. May you also please test the same with Intrepid? thanks.

I started having this same problem when I upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid. I tend to run into the bug when using vim, especially when searching for text. When I enter a search term and hit enter, nothing changes on the screen (it doesn't redraw). Clicking on the title bar causes the screen to redraw, and display the expected text.

Sometimes I get a partial redraw of the window; this usually occurs wherever the terminal window overlaps (is on top of) another window. The rest of the window doesn't redraw. In any of these cases, hitting Control-L doesn't fix the problem -- it seems to be unaffected by keystrokes or any output from the terminal. Only clicking the title bar consistently redraws the window.

The bug, as I reported it, appears to be a duplicate of #270377. I have closed the upstream Gnome bug, as it's not libvte, but apparently compiz. (Does not occur at all when compiz is enabled, and anyway occurs in xterm.)
