Bug Description

With click-to-focus disabled (follow focus), compiz does not allow focusing on the desktop with any non-minimized windows present. If click-to-focus is enabled, then compiz behaves as expected.

Steps to reproduce:

- disable click-to-focus in compiz
- open at least one application
- try to rename a file on the desktop

At this point the desktop will not receive focus, and typing will go into the last focused window, not the desktop (for file rename).

lsb_release info:
  Ubuntu precise (development branch) 12.04

compiz version:
  1:0.9.7.0+bzr3035-0ubuntu1

I experience these symptoms regardless of whether I'm in click-to-focus or focus-follows-mouse mode.

It's worth mentioning also that (a) this behavior isn't consistent with the rest of Nautilus -- in any regular Nautilus window, clicking on a file icon also delivers keyboard focus to that window; (b) this doesn't happen with Unity2d -- in that environment, you *can* click on the desktop and have it receive keyboard events; and (c) it's impossible to rename a desktop icon without minimizing all other windows first, which is clunky.

Confirmed as in #2 with Compiz on Mate Desktop (Linux Mint 15, based on Ubuntu 13.04), Compiz version 0.9.9.0 (1:0.9.9~daily13.06.19~13.04-0ubuntu1): No matter whether click-to-focus is set or not.

This worked fine in previous versions; I had not with Compiz on Ubuntu 10.04 and Gnome2 (Mate is a Gnome2 fork, after all).

Bug confirmed on Ubuntu 13.04 with Compiz 0.9.7.12 on Mate Desktop.

As in the initial descrition :

"With click-to-focus disabled", if you have a window opened and with the focus, you can't delete a file on the desktop using the keyboard, even if you select if by clicking on the icon.
However, renaming is not ok either.

With "click to focus" activated, you have first to click on the file on the desktop, then you can then delete it.
So it should be a matter of mouse focusing.

Morevover, I think it a rather important problem, because you can send to trash, files from other opened windows without knowing it.

At some point I discovered that if you click while pressing Meta, Super or Alt or whatever has been set as the special key, you can give focus to icons on the desktop anyway.

It works for me at least, but does it work for you?

This is somehow fixed in 15.04, great!
