The gedit, edit, preferences from #5 exhibits the symptoms, as does opening Synaptic and reloading sources or making any changes - when the application window is on the left-hand monitor dialogue boxes always appear at the very left of the right-hand monitor. This happens no matter the window placement option selected in CCSM, Place Windows.
Disabling Place Windows lets dialogue boxes appear in the correct position.
