Bug Description
Just guessing that this might be a compiz issue.
When activating a second monitor I regularly find compiz (and/or unity) crashing leaving me with no window manager. Happens quite frequently. Sometimes it works.
Once it's broken I restart lightdm, login and try again. Usually it works after trying a few times.
