Can't click mouse with Compiz effects

Bug Description

I upgraded from Maverick to Natty and then the mouse wouldn't click. It wasn't frozen, I could move the pointer, but none of my clicks registered. In the login screen I selected the Ubuntu Classic without the Compiz effects, and this lets me in and everything works fine (except Compiz, that is). But any time I try to log in with Unity or with the effects on the mouse will not click.

I'm using the current NVidia driver for my GeForce 7300SE with an Acer S211HL monitor set at 1920x1080 60Hz. This configuration worked perfectly under 10.10 and 10.4, even with all of the Compiz effects.

I tried backing up my data files and installing 11.04 fresh, formatting the drive. Same problem. I can always get in with the effects off, but any time I try either Unity or the Classic with effects on I can't click on anything with the mouse.

I have a similar problem. I can log in (classic with effects), but after working for a while, the mouse behaves strangely:

* I cannot focus any window
* the cursor does not change on hover, always stays at the same state (for example the text-selector)
* if I manage to open a terminal by shortcut it gets focussed, but I cannot leave
* xkill and xwininfo cannot grab the mouse
* if the cursor "froze" in text-select mode I can select text without even hovering over the text: I have to displays. on #1 there is a term. When I click & drag the mouse cursor on the second screen, text in the terminal gets selected

If you still experience this bug, can you please open the Terminal and run command "apport-collect 775568"?

Done. I am still experiencing this in 11.10. Unity-2D runs fine, but the regular Unity still has this problem.

As from UnitySupportTest.txt, your video card is blacklisted and thus cannot run Unity 3D.

You should use Unity 2D in this case.

Thank you for the information, Dmitry. This raises two questions for me:

1) Why is it blacklisted and is there anything I can do about it? and

2) Why doesn't Ubuntu come up and tell me that's the problem and save me (and others) a lot of bother?

I don't know why this wasn't auto-detected on your side (you should better ask it as a question).

For more information on issues with your video card, see bug 726496 and http://askubuntu.com/questions/37629/geforce-go-7300-7400-blacklisted-can-i-still-run-unity.
