Removing compiz and compiz-gnome causes a new bug for me, see LP:559106. However, that bug is more related to the Appearance Properties dialog (it should work correctly without compiz and/or compiz-gnome installed too).

Having had a quick look into the issue it seems this stems from "compiz-gnome (<< 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu14)" in metacity 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu1, whereas compiz-gnome (and compiz) in the archive are at 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu13.

Attached are the relevant portions of apt.log.

compiz-gnome version 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 is in the archives now. I assume this resolved the issue. IMHO there should be a script (or lock) on the servers which prevents such problems.
