The package compiz and compiz-gnome were removed with the partial-upgrade.
Maybe thats the reason. I have the same problem now, but when trying to install these two packages again, Synaptic wants to remove metacity and ubuntu-desktop, so i didn't do it!

Changed in compiz (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

I have an Thinkpad T400 with Intel GMA 4500MHD. So it is probably not
driver related.

I had the same problem.
I just did "apt-get update" and installed compiz-gnome.
Everything works fine again.

Didn't synaptic wanted to remove metacity when installing compiz-gnome?

Nope,
nothing like that.
But then, I didn't use synaptic.

Manually downloading and installing compiz-core, compiz-plugins and compiz-gnome should fix it in the meantime.

Had the same Problem, "sudo aptitude install compiz-gnome" fixed it for me.

Synaptics indeed wanted to remove metycity and ubuntu-desktop.
