I also have a Thinkpad T41 with the same video specs: ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 etc. I tried LiveCD, Karmic, Alpha 6, with same result as everyone else reporting above. System lockup which requires power off/power on. Keyboard is unresponsive. I posted my version of the bug, in the wrong section, I guess. Sorry about that.
I find that the lockup always occurs (instantly) when trying to load Firefox and also it happened when Synaptic was started and I tried to resize the window.
