I can confirm this in 9.04 using the fglrx driver. When setting VLC to full screen, the video locks up (the sound keeps playing) for a second or two. When notify-osd appears, the background is shown for a little while, and the video locks up. The same thing happens when minimizing from full screen to normal windowed mode.

I have a similar problem using smplayer. Whenever I access the menu bar or change the volume (notify-osd) the screen flickers and the desktop is shown. When the option "redirect fullscreen windows" in compiz settings is turned of the problem disappears but then I get terrible video tearing. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and I am using a nvidia geforce 7300 with the binary driver version "180.44-0ubuntu1".

Is it really still sensible to enable "unredirect fullscreen windows" when it causes so many graphics issues. I am no expert but I don't think that it necessarily improves performance by any noticeable amount - fedora does not enable it by default and this does not cause any major problems.

I think as well as aiming for flicker free boot we should try and make sure that the whole desktop is flicker free.
