ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10
All updates current as of 2008-08-03 11:56 EDT (except for kernel updates, can't get those on LiveCD).
On my intel graphics laptop, desktop effects was not enabled by default. I was able to turn it on in the Appearances applet, but it gave the error "Desktop Effects could not be enabled", even though they had been.
