Bug Description

Hi,

I use Ubuntu Hardy 32 bit on a laptop with NVidia QUADRO FX 1500M graphic card and nvidia closed drivers. My desktop has Compiz Fusion activated.

I'm not sure if this issue is related to Firefox or Compiz, or whatever else, but after the last system update of today, 24 july 2008, the window of Firefox open maximized (as always), but without window decoration (title bar and border).
With the compiz-fusion Icon I have tried to restart Compiz, but no way to obtain firefox window decoration.
I have opened other program windows, but only Firefox has this issue.

The only workaround I have find out is to open a new firefox window from the menu File/New Window. The new window has decorations.

I encountered the same issue today without warning, except for me, opening a new window from File->New Window did not resolve the issue. Starting Firefox from the command prompt gave no errors or warnings. The only resolution I could find was to first start in safe mode (which had window decoration), then start in normal mode (with all add-ons still enabled). Everything is fine now.

Any idea how to better look for errors/warnings/messages in the future?

I can confirm it

I am having the same kind of issue with ubuntu hardy heron 8.04 running compiz and with an Intel 945GM video card.

Desactivate/Activating Addons would reset firefox and fix the problem temporarly
A reboot can fix the issue temporarly.
Stopping Compiz Fusion DOESNT fix the problem.

The Window decoration going away seems kinda random.

I tried desactivating most addons (I kept the ubuntu addon that was there by default) but the problem appearing again after a while. Right now trying to run firefox without any addon.

Resizing and moving the firefox window do not work anymore when the window decoration is gone. The firefox takes all the screen space when that happens actually and firefox 'flashes' a bit when switching windows/workspace.

Please do not close this ticket! I can reproduce the issue everytime with Firefox. I just need to know what information you'll need about my system. I'm running Hardy 8.04. Using Compiz and Nvidia driver. I can reproduce the issue with Gnome Desktop and XFCE. My display also flashes a bit when opening firefox. Here's a dmesg output:

I have the same issue on Hardy 32 bit with all updates: Firefox's window decoration disappears randomly, several times a day. (It actually disappeared when I navigated to this page here.)

My workaround is to hit F11 (full screen) twice. The first activates full-screen mode, and the second deactivates it again, at which point the window gets its decoration back.

Same problem here on Heron 8.04 with compiz-fusion on GNOME with emerald window decorator. Every time I open firefox it has this problem. I'm not sure if its directly related, but I think this problem appeared when I downloaded the latest compiz update through the update manager. Using GTK-Window-Decorator doesn't fix it, nor does switching to metacity. Switching to fullscreen and then back fixes it. If a link within the "broken" firefox opens a new firefox window, the new window has window decoration. As a side note, when the window decoration is gone from firefox, it is on top of the gnome-panel, which I keep minimized, as well as on top of "Keep Above" screenlets. Avant Window Navigator is still on top of firefox, though.

Just as a side note, I have the same problem however I use Arch Linux and KDE4.1. The F11 solution also works for me. It seems this is a specific firefox problem. I also changed my composite manager from Compiz to KWin and the problem remains.

Morover, it hides application that are not supposed to be hidden (e.g. AWN). I think it appeard after an update for me as well (not sure about this). F11 solution works. Hope this helps.

After activating compiz. Randomly opened with no decoration.

F11 twice works here too. Has to be when visual effects are switched on.

It also started after flipping between cubed desktops.

same here since Intrepid, F11 works.

Seems it happened the first time when I maximized firefox window, then closed it and opened it the next session.
After that, unmaximize didn't work properly, and maximizing again would give the same windowless result.

After unmaximize + resize (to smaller window), then close, then open again, things seem to be ok.

Can confirm this for Intrepid too.

I noticed that deleting the file localstore.rdf in the .mozilla directory fixed it. For a while, then it came back.
Then I took a look at the file, and saw the lines that was responsible for it. I deleted those lines, and till now I didn't had any problems.

It were the lines looking like this:

  <RDF:Description RDF:about="chrome://browser/content/browser.xul#main-window"
                   height="715"
                   screenX="18"
                   screenY="52"
                   width="995"
                   sizemode="maximized" />

With total wrong numbers (too large).

For the moment I haven't been able to reproduce after deleting lines in that file.
If someone knows who to reproduce it, let me know.

Same here.

Intrepid up to date to 9 Nov 2008.

localstore.rdf lists RDF:Description RDF:about="chrome://browser/content/browser.xul#main-window" more than once, with different sizes.

The last entry is 1690x1172, but the real screen resolution is less (1680x1050)

I think you gotta delete that file while firefox is not running.

f11 twice works.
