Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, whenever i use the latest firefox and evince in fullscreen, and the mouse hovers over a link with some comment popping up, the entire screen refreshes. I have compiz installed, maybe this is a problem.

it happens with either firefox or evince, not at the same time. I mean not because both are open at the same time.

Thank you for reporting this. Please try to reproduce this behavior with compiz deaktivated/deinstalled.

Completely reproducible for me too. In Firefox Full screen mode, whenver the user hovers over a link with a tooltip and compiz turned on, the entire screen flickers. This does not happen with Compiz turned off.

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 9.04. Hovering over something that pops up a tooltip causes flickering. Evince is affected in fullscreen and presentation mode (both are fullscreen modes), firefox in fullscreen mode.
Not using compiz solves the problem, no flickering with metacity.

This bug is easily reproducible. Once Firefox is in fullscreen, open a few tabs and switch between them. Flickers almost every time. Right clicking to see the context menu causes the same problem.

Kai Jauch (kaijauch) wrote :

Switching between tabs doesn't cause flickering, it's the tooltips of the tabs (popping up when you hover over a tab) that are causing the flickering. Opening the context menu also flickers, as you said.
Alt-Tab also causes flickering, which goes mad if you re-select firefox or evince, but don't release alt-tab.

I also noticed that clicking on select form elements causes flickering as well. It's actually hard to not reproduce this bug.

vasilis34: "You have to enable the unredirect fullscreen option on the general options tab of the advanced desktop effects configuration. It works for the image viewer, BUT it gives also another problem. There is a weird flicker occasionally in videos played by VLC on fullscreen. It isn't very often and not as annoying as the flicker in image viewer's fullscreen but it seems like the picture loses it's vertical synchronization just for a moment"

I upgraded to Jaunty yesterday, this has made the bug appear on two pcs (some laptop with nvidia graphics, one with intel).

Alt-Tab is almost unusable with fullscreen apps. Browsing with FF in fullscreen mode is a PITA.

I can confirm the same problem with Jaunty Jackalope for both Evince and Firefox. Additionally firefox in fullscreen also faces the flickering problem when you Ctrl+Tab between different browser tabs (in addition to the Alt+Tab flickering problem).

I can confirm this bug, with compiz enabled. Firefox 3.0.1 and evince 2.26.1 in fullscreen flickers every time you right-clik, or hover over a button (for example the next page button in evince or the reload in firefox). Hovering over tooltips ot tabs in firefox and opening a context menu in both programs also reproduces the program. Moreover Alt-Tab also causes flickering, which goes mad if you re-select firefox or evince or any window that is minimised or shaded (only the title bar appearing) , but don't release alt-tab. I also use emerald if that makes any difference.
