Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz-core

To answer the questions asked in the bug submission form:

1. Ubuntu release:

Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04

2. Version of packages. I'm adding konsole too for good measure and xserver-xorg.

compiz-core:
  Installed: 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu6
  Candidate: 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu6
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu6 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

konsole:
  Installed: 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu7
  Candidate: 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu7
  Version table:
 *** 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu7 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

xserver-xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.3+10ubuntu10
  Candidate: 1:7.3+10ubuntu10
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.3+10ubuntu10 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3. Expected behavior: I expected no corruption.

4. Actual behavior: corruption happened.

It happens very frequently if I do this:

1. Open konsole in one viewport.
2. Work with konsole (issue apt-get install, whatever, the actual command is not important).
3. Switch to another viewport, work there for a bit.
4. Come back to the viewport in which konsole is located. At this stage, corruption is likely.

Unfortunately, the steps above do not *always* reproduce the problem.

Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "true"

Does putting that in your xorg.conf Device and/or Screen section fix the problem?

In my case this option resolve the problem, but it creates a new issue: I'm unable to use virtualbox (1.5.6 or 1.6.0).
Do you know another way to resolve the problem, without using this option?

Thank you
Scido

Issue confirmed here :

- Hardy, NVidia board, latest hardy-included NVidia drivers : Konsole text gets corrupt / scrambled when Compiz active and cube rotated.
- Also some other text shows this corruption, i.e. text in Kontact status bar
- « Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "true" » in xorg.conf seems to fix the issue.
- However Virtualbox (1.6.0-30421_Ubuntu_hardy, Sun package) seems to accept this fix without crashing, contrary to report above. Rotating the cube properly rotates the VirtualBox display window as well.

Dear Swâmi,
can you please say me which OS you installed on linux host (I've got problem with WinXP installed on hardy host)?
If you installed WinXP, can you please report the configuration of your VB Machine?

Thank you vary much.

Bye,
Scido

It's an XP inside the VirtualBox, and I believe my VBox config has nothing special regarding the video. Just the "Virtualbox additions" installed, that's all.

Anyway, I have just quit using Compiz on this machine because I observed several system locks (not real locks, I can SSH into it from another machine, but it is locally unusable) with screensavers and Compiz. Compiz goes 100% CPU usage and the keyboard becomes dead after some time in screensaver mode. I believe Compiz has hard times managing perpetual changes in the root window, that would probably need another bug report which I'm too lazy to file... That's the very reason why I had quit using Beryl a year ago after only a few days using it : The machine often became unusable after having spent some time in screensaver mode. Compiz does the same now and I have no time to try to find a fix. As soon as something makes my machine unusable, I'm afraid I have to quit using it immediately...

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I have switched back to Gnome so I no longer have the necessary software installed to reproduce this bug.

Thanks. Closing the bug because it lacks the information we need to investigate the problem.
