Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

This bug is occurring on a Dell Inspiron 1420 with the integrated Nvidia 8400M GS graphics. The nvidia-glx-new driver is installed.

Problem:

When resuming from either suspend or hibernate, the laptop screen displays a white screen with a cursor. The cursor is freely movable. After blindly entering the correct password, the Gnome desktop correctly displays.

This problem is reproducible 100% of the time, simply by resuming from either suspend or hibernate. The laptop suspends and resumes correctly, this is the last known problem. All other drivers and services correctly restart.

Compiz was isolated as the contributing factor by removing it and testing. The method used to stop compiz was by entering the following into a terminal:

    $ metacity --replace &
    $ killall compiz compiz.real

Afterwards, I am able to resume from either suspend or hibernate consistently, multiple times (3 times apiece consecutively), without getting the whitescreen and instead getting the password prompt as expected.

Workaround:

The only known workaround at this time is to simply disable compiz. As compiz is a signature feature of Ubuntu, any requests for additional information will be promptly answered.

Per the DebuggingCompiz page, also attaching copies of .xsession-errors and Xorg.0.log

This attachment is the .xsession-errors file after clean start.

Later this evening I will also include .xsession-errors and Xorg.0.logs after suspend / resume cycle with compiz inactive.

Hope this helps,

Harvey
