Happened when screen would not turn back on with Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 Beta running on a Compaq Presario V6000 (AMD Turion x64 on an nVidia gForce Go chipset). I had to restart XOrg (with ctrl>alt> backspace) and login again.
