Keyboard shortcuts for raise/lower window not working

On Hardy, setting the key in advanced compiz settings for raise/lower window has no effect. Whatever keycombo I give, it's just ignored.

I have the exact same problem, but middle clicking on the window's title bar has the desired effect of lowering the window. I don't understand why a keyboard shortcut can't be assigned.

If you use System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts, you can assign a shortcut there. "Keyboard Shortcuts" is inferior, however, because it won't accept shortcuts using the Super key for instance and for many other reasons. It would be nice if this worked with Compiz's keyboard settings.

Erm, actually after futzing around for a while it suddenly started working. I have no idea what I did to make it start working. Sorry for spamming everyone.

Upon further testing, enabling and disabling the shortcut in System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts seems to "free up" the keyboard shortcut for the Compiz keyboard settings thing. I now can both raise and lower the window using the shortcuts defined in Compiz.

Thanks, this fixes the issue. The bug still exists, though, this it
should just work without the user having to fix it this way. :)

Furthermore, after enabling-and-disabling the hotkey in the GNOME hotkey
panel, and then setting e.g. the raise keycombo to Super+F in the Compiz
settings, the GNOME panel now shows that setting to be set to just the
"F" key! (I.e. it doesn't show the Super at all there.) The F key on its
own doesn't fortunately actually do anything, though. :)

For me, the workaround to get "raise obscured window, otherwise lower" working has no effect. Binding, unbinding, or rebinding this action to F4 or any other key doesn't give me any functionality.

I'm running 8.10 and I can't get raise/lower key binding to work. I've tried the various suggestions on this thread and nothing seems to get me this capability. It's probably the most aggravating thing I've experienced since my move to using Compiz cause it's goes directly against my muscle memory.

Sorry, another point of info... I have the compizconfig-settings-manager installed (0.7.8-0ubuntu3) and when I try to set the keybinding for raise/lower through 'General Options' / 'Key bindings', there is no option listed for that window operation.

I also looked under the 'Window Management' section and have 'Extra WM Actions enabled (but it has no option in there for raise-lower either). I am using the GConf Configuration backend (as opposed to the file based back end) and have 'Enable integration into the desktop environment' enabled. I've attached a copy of an export of my Compiz profile exported (minus the defaults). Hope this helps.

I hate changing the status of tickets I'm not the owner over, but this issue is *still* an issue and marking it as 'incomplete' apparently puts it on a fast track for removal. The Keyboard Shortcuts option for 'Raise obscured window, otherwise lower' is associated with a metacity gconf entry (/apps/metacity/window_keybindings/raise_or_lower). No key under /apps/compiz would even seem to have the same function. This issue is still very much alive. I'd be very interested to see the "gconftool-2 --dump /" of anyone who has got this working (along with a hint of what your keybinding is).

I can confirm that this issue still exists in the Ubuntu 9.04 release candidate.

If the "Click to Focus" setting is disabled, the keyboard bindings for raise and lower window will work.

The mouse bindings for this seem to work regardless of the aforementioned setting.

I've found a bit of hope with this problem. Asking about raise/lower on the #compiz channel, I was pointed to the vigo plugin for compiz at: http://www.acc.umu.se/~janlert/vigo/

Getting it to compile required a few additional packages (compiz-dev, compiz-fusion-bcop, libtool). Other tools are probably necessary that I already had installed (e.g. build-essential).

Once those packages were installed, I was able to do a 'make; make install' and the plugin was built and installed into ~/.compiz/plugins/libvigo.so. Once installed, I was able to use the CompizConfig Settings Manager (package compizconfig-settings-manager) to go into the vigo plugin under "Window Management" and set the keybinding I wanted. Logged out, killed the X server, logged back in and I have raise-lower!

All that being said... this is *STILL* a bug in Ubuntu. There is still UI element under System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts > Window Management labeled "Raise obscured window, otherwise lower" that does nothing but waste people's time.

Here is what I learned from my bug report on the Gnome bugzilla: this problem goes away if you turn off all desktop visual effects, which switches you from the compiz window manager to metacity. To do this I went into System -> Preferences -> Appearance and clicked the Visual Effects tab, and selected "None". Evidently this fixes "Move window to workspace N" as well.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

This bug still affects me in release 12.04 on a machine with an nVidia card.

Logging out and logging in with the 2-D session fixes this.

It also fixes the behavior of the "Maximize Window Vertically" operation. With 3-D it maximizes, but repeating does not restore the original size. With 2-D the operation toggles, which is arguably a better behavior.

By the way, by "logging in with the 2-D session" I mean logging out, then before logging back in using the menu which appears when you click the unity symbol to choose a 2-D session.

When I say that switching to 2-D "fixes the problem", that is not really accurate because switching to 2-D means you are no longer using compiz.

Updating: as of Ubuntu 14.04 there doesn't seem to be *be* a raise/lower function. You can bind a key to raise or to lower, but not raise/lower. I couldn't even find it in compizconfig-settings-manager
