Hi
Compiz is a set of programs used for managing the desktop and enabling the special effects. You use the Synaptic package manager to uninstall and install them(and all your other software). If you do not know where that is you find it in desktop menu under System>Administration>Synaptic Packager Manager. This has a search utility and you can search for compiz and it will list all the compiz packages on  your system. You right click on the package to get the list of available actions. All I did was choose the complete uninstall option(removes all settings as well as the software) and then reinstall. It seems that that did the trick. When doing this I was logged in using the Gnome failsafe desktop which does not need compiz.

Hope this helps. By the way, once you get used to linux you'll love it. I took windows off my system 2 years ago and don't miss it at all. Have fun.

Thanks, I am an almost total Linux novice.  I am running an ATI video card
and gather from your notes below that the crash is somehow related to
video.  I have no idea what the compiz programs are or how to reinstall
them.  I do find Ubuntu 8.04 more useful than 7.10, which was the first
Ubuntu that would actually install to my computer.  I think that in a few
more iterations Ubuntu will displace Windows on my machines.  But not yet.
So, what is compiz and how do I get the files to reinstall them?

Status in Source Package "compiz" in Ubuntu: New

Bug description:
Binary package hint: compiz

Ubuntu Hardy Heron beta i386, following today's kernel and compix updates. Crash in compiz.real.

After login, white screen when desktop should appear. CTRL+ALT+F1 can bring up the terminal. Used sudo top to kill Xorg process. This produced new login screen. Change session to Gnome fail-safe works (nothing else does). Fail-safe mode produces desktop, wireless works.

At some point shortly after I begin working, a crash alert appears, for compiz.real. That's when I sent this message. At the time, I had opened the system monitor window, but I don't think that caused the crash.

Under normal circumstances, my desktop uses flgrx (ATI) display driver, with only one workspace.

compiz version  1:0.7.4-0ubuntu4. There was no package compiz.real or compiz-real located by apt-cache policy.
