Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Desktop effects could not be enabled on my Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000. Effects worked in Gutsy. I am using a clean install of Hardy Beta. I expected Desktop Effects to be enabled by default, as they were in Gutsy.

lsb_release -rd:
Description: Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release: 8.04

I have also this regression. I have an ATI Mobility X700 on my acer Aspire 5024WLMi.
Since Xorg 7.3, X700 works quite nice with the opensource radeon driver.
When i tried liveCD Hardy alpha 6, compiz effects worked fine , but now with the liveCD hardy beta, 3D acceleration and DRI are enabled but not compiz effects.
Maybe, I should try with ATi fglrx driver.

Compiz cannot be enabled on my machine. I am running Hardy Beta version (8.04), using the Intel 945GM chipset on an HP530. I have tried changing the drivers to the i810 from default, but still no dice.

I can confirm this. Desktop effects could not be enabled on a HP nx7000 Laptop. ATI Radeon 9200 installed an using the free radeon driver. Desktop effects worked fine on gutsy.

Same issue on my Dell Inspiron 9300 with ATI Technologies Inc M22 Mobility Radeon X300 graphics card. Just upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04. Everything worked fine before the upgrade.

The instructions below worked for me!

To get this to run, according to this post, you will need to modify /usr/bin/compiz by adding these two lines at the top of the file:

    LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT="true"
    SKIP_CHECKS="yes"

I found this at http://yoonkit.blogspot.com/2008/04/compiz-works-on-heron.html
