Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Unlike many of the other SIGSEGV bug reports, this crash of compiz is not related to screensaver.
Indeed, this bug also occurs when the PC is actively used.

The current workaround is to disable all effects.

Oups, I forgot to describe the bug.
After some time, the system freezes. However, the mouse is still moving but pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE or CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE does not work.
To reboot the PC, a hard reset is needed. It is also possible to connect to the computer through SSH and call reboot.

Hi Gerard,
Which video card do you have? I guess you have an ATI card, don't you?
Please, send some information about the pc you're using.

Hi Angelo,
Indeed, my video card is an ATI RV380 [Radeon X600 SE] with 128MB of memory.
My PC is a Dell Optiplex GX620 with a Pentium 4 (3Ghz) CPU, 1GB DDR-II RAM and a SATA hard drive of 80GB.
The video driver I currently use is "ati". I think I tried the fglrx driver before but I can't remember why I switched back to the "ati" one.
If you need more informations let me know...
Gérard

I tried the fglrx driver to find out why I don't use it.
The answer is quite simple: It does not work with my video card (the X server refuses to start).
Yet, the fglrx driver is suggested as the "proprietary driver" to use...

Gerard,
as I supposed, you have an X-series ATI video card and the "ati open driver" is badly broken when using compiz and (in general) X composite extension for this kind of hardware.
I have an ATI X700 and I'm having the same problem described by you (X freezes but mouse still moving).
Take a look at those links below:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15096
https://bugs.launchpad.net/xf86-video-ati/+bug/108527
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/195051

For now, (if it's not already done) ubuntu devs just have to blacklist this video card in the compiz startup script.

Please, attach the output of this command ' lspci -n | grep 1002'

Thanks

Hi Gerard,
you should open a new compiz bug to blacklist your video card
(1002:5b62: RV380[Radeon X600 (PCIE)])
