readd intel 965 to blacklist

Bug #184720 reported by Travis Watkins on 2008-01-21
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
compiz (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Since we're not going to be able to use EXA (at least for now) we need to add the 965 to the blacklist again.

Changed in compiz:
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Triaged
milestone: none → hardy-alpha-4

Changed in compiz:
milestone: hardy-alpha-4 → hardy-alpha-5
milestone: hardy-alpha-5 → ubuntu-8.04-beta

This won't be necessary - we found that by forcing the greedy migration heuristic on 965, it resolves pretty much all the EXA/965 issues that we were seeing with the default "always" heuristic. So we can ship 965 with EXA now, and there's no need for blacklisting it. See bug 177492 for the patch and some more discussion.

Changed in compiz:
status: Triaged → Fix Released

Whilst the display issues have been fixed, there are still massive hibernate/suspend issues with the i965.

i965 should remain blacklisted until hibernate is fixed. Whether this should apply solely to Compiz or to Metacity too, I'll investigate further.

I have only been able to hibernate and resume successfully once on my Dell Inspiron 1520 with Intel X3100 (i965) graphics under Hardy, and I've been testing it daily since January! Sorry guys, but i965 with Hardy is not stable enough for an LTS release, even if it does display correctly.

What reason would we have to blacklist i965 over hibernation issues? What effect does compiz have on hibernation?

I don't understand your comment about applying the blacklist to metacity. You can't just not use a window manager on the hardware because of hibernation bugs.

Running Hardy at the present on a ThinkPad R61i everything works fine for me on 965. (Only modification is textrueoverlay set to false in xorg.conf, I guss it will be default shortly for intel.)
Suspend, compiz, xv, gl, smooth scrolling. Everything.
