This also applies to my other 2 computers which have had upgrades from 16.04 to 18.04.

I can't reproduce this on cosmic with Unity. Upgrade is not a safe option. Try with fresh install. Beside screen locking is gnome-screensaver/systemd/settings-daemon thing. Not sure what compiz has to do with it.

This occurs on both a new install of Bionic and upgrades from Xenial to Bionic. All PCs use SSD but that may be irrelevant. It seems to be improving with upgrades of SSD packages. Which package would be causing the problem? I have no intention of doing clean installs as it involves a lot of work in subsequent configuration. Any quality OS should allow upgrading rather than having to do a clean install. All PCs now use Gnome rather than Unity.

Ok you are using gnime-shell. Gnome shell doesn't use unity. Try relegating this bug to gnome-settings-daemon or gdm or gnome-shell.

Changed in compiz (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
affects: compiz (Ubuntu) → gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)
