Bug Description
Binary package hint: compiz
Smart window placement (ccsm -> Place Windows -> Placement Mode: Smart) insists on leaving an empty space of 16 pixels on the right side of the screen.
I'll attach two schemata explaining the problem: Both show one big already opened window which just leaves enough space for an xterm window to right of it. Metacity manages to place a new xterm in the free space. Compiz doesn't: It tries to keep the rightmost 16 pixels of the desktop free.
I can only reproduce this problem on the right side of the screen. When the free space is on the top, left, or bottom, then smart placement works fine.
