Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

1. enable compiz desktop effects
2. open a citrix ica client window
3. switch viewports (Ctrl-Alt-Left/Right)
4. switch back to original viewport - citrix window is gone.
5. citrix processes (wfica and wfica.sh) are still running.

When compiz effects are not enabled then the citrix window is still there.

Also all other apps except citrix are still there when I switch back.

OR:
Open a new ICA connection, try to maximize, and un-maximize the window. - coruption, and then window disappears.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release?

Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Some additional info: this problem only happens when the client is run in 'seamless' mode, it does not occur of the client is run in 'full-screen' mode, or any of the fixed size modes as far as I can tell.

Confirm this is still a problem in Hardy.

As stated, the citrix windows disappear when using compiz, but remain if metacity is used. This suggests a compiz/X type problem.

This is a painful problem as the citrix client is well used in corporate desktops and would hamper Ubuntus take up.

What information is required to look at this?

Interestingly I don't find this a problem any more. Appologies for forgetting to come back and say this!

This was a problem for me on Gutsy but now I'm on Hardy it's not anymore. However...

I have switched to a Nvidia graphics card from an onboard intel one and I now have two monitors in twinview. I guess these changes could have made a difference. I'm also running the 64bit version of Ubuntu, although the citrix client I'm running is only available in a 32bit version.

The citrix client I'm using is version 10.6.115659. I don't know which version I was running on Gutsy.

I'm running the desktop cube (although only with two sides so it's more a desktop plane really) and I can switch between the sides and I don't loose my citrix windows. However I do loose my Lotus Notes running under Wine! My solution for this is to stick it on the widget layer and set it to be on all workspaces. I guess I should log the wine+compiz problem.

Clean install of ubuntu hardy (plus updates) on lenovo core duo /intel graphics box.
citrix (latest english client) in seamless mode has the same problem when using compiz cube OR switching desktops. This occurs whether advanced effects + cube are enabled, or just "normal" effects and no cube switching from one desktop to another. With compiz off, using metacity only the citrix seamless windows do not disappear.

Running citrix applications "non-seamless" seems to be a work around, but this is NOT an option for these work machines. This is a show stopper out here at IBM in boulder for even looking at this distro if our main tool for ticketing systems (ESD) cannot be used normally.

Thorsten,

We have seen this and suspect that it is due to a bug in Compiz.

When this error occurs, xwininfo shows that the window has been made Override Redirect and its X properties have been removed.

I hope this helps,

Phil

So, this being most likely a compiz bug, would SOMEONE please get on this that 'can'?

In the previous post, the quoted comment actually refers to another issue: the Program Neighborhood Agent login window in the Citrix client program (wfcmgr) shrinks to an unusable button with Compiz. A possible workround for lost windows for Citrix sessions is to use the Restore button in wfcmgr's Tools->Connection Center window.

Casey J Peter (caseyjp1) wrote :

That work around doesn't resolve the bigger issue which is that citrix misbehaves badly under compiz AS WELL AS under metacity. Set up seamless windows on a desktop and then switch to another destkop. This completely messes up the window positioning of the citrix clients, sometimes even as far as the seamless windows following to the highlighted desktop. Going back to the original desktop and the seamless windows (under metacity) are bunched together and in incorrect positions. Under Compiz, switching causes the seamless citrix windows to crash forcing a restart to the citrix session.

The quoted post was to indicate that the gui problems are at least acknowledged by citrix to be an issue with the window managers.

After having tested with Intrepid Ibex and the newer version of compiz as well as testing via hardy and the newer version of compiz, there has been no change or resolution to this issue.

The ONLY work around is to set up the seamless session(s) in their own windowed environments. (read: not seamless.)

Currently, citrix is barely usable under linux/ubuntu and needs looking at badly. There are way to many corporate environments that DEPEND on smooth citrix operation for this to be "just another issue". If Ubuntu wishes to be taken seriously as a corporate desktop environment, then these citrix issues MUST get looked at and resolved. Whether this is upstream, or dealt with in conjunction with Compiz/Citrix, it needs looking at.

also, resizing a ICA window from fullscreen to anything else, also makes a mess, and causes the ICAclient to terminate.

System:
Dell Optiplex 320 with ATI Radeon (the most crappy piece of hardware I ever had).
Ubuntu 8.04
Citrix ICA for Linux 10.06.115659
Libmotif3 2.2.3-2.

I disabled the "Visual Effects" with success regarding the message and crash. The window resize problem, is still there under certain circumstances.

If I first resize the window using the panel bar, then the resize problem occur if I use the window button next time.

If I use the panel bar to set the window back to first state, then the problem is gone next time I use the window buttons.

Hello,

I experience the window crash problem. I am on Ubuntu Intrepid using compiz on an nvidia (proprietary manufacturer driver version 173) graphics card with chipset FX5200 on an AMD Dual Core Phenom with Linux Kernel Version 2.6.27-9-generic (not the 64bit kernel).

I also receive this type of error in this situation. I am using the current ICA client and latest intrepid fully updated as of 1/30/09. Switching virtual desktops kills the ICA client visually, but processes seem to continue to run to allow reconnection (which is quite annoying when you think the ICA Client is dead).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Old bu but still a problem for me as of today (and the last couple of years). As I move from versiont o version this "feature" follows me.

I used to have to force quit the ICA process, but thanks to the shortcut keys in this post for switching view ports I now know how to find the window again.

Would be convenient if this could be fixed, however it seems pretty persistant so I assume it will be around a while longer

If I was rich I would sponsor this, if I worked at Citrix I would try to convince them to provide a testing server. But as a user all I can do is report the bug and cross my fingures.

System info:
Ubuntu 11.10
1.p gig memory

104.3 G disk
Intel core 2 duo cpu @ 2.53 MHZ x 2

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. The compiz program that we currently use in Ubuntu is a C++ re-write of the original compiz and was announced the 4th July 2010. Therefore, the bugs that were reported before that date, will be marked as "Won't Fix" as they probably exist in the original program which is not stored in launchpad. (The last LTS that used the old compiz is the 10.04 which is not supported anymore).
