Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug was not associated with the correct package, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in compiz.

Could you attach the output of running "compiz --replace" in a terminal, please?

Hello Chris,

I have one board called

$ lspci | grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

It's one Dell Optiplex 745 (Core 2 Duo).

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 and also get the message "Desktop effects could not be enabled" when I try to enable it on "Visual Effects".

$ compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Blacklisted PCIID '8086:2992' found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value for keybinding "toggle_shaded"

My Hardware Database ID is 99c7ac45a6ae0684bf27cc0307685f85

$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

xorg.conf:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller"
        Driver "intel"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

What more information can I pass for you?

Thanks

Ah. Your card is blacklisted from running Compiz due to problems with video support under Compiz. As such, your inability to enable desktop effects is intended.

If you wish to use Compiz/desktop effects anyway, you can override this blacklist by adding "SKIP_CHECK=yes" to ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager, most easily accomplished by running
echo SKIP_CHECKS="yes" >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager
in a terminal.

in Gutsy, compiz worked fine. But when I upgraded to Hardy it stopped working and I get this message:
"Desktop effects could not be enabled"

my system is sony vaio vgn-a230

lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M9+ 5C61 [Radeon Mobility 9200 (AGP)] (rev 01)

There are similar problems reported here:
<http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=698256>

<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/193702>

I confirm that by running the following command compiz starts (and it seems that it works fine):
echo SKIP_CHECKS="yes" >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager
