Bug Description

I am using a fully updated gutsy beta version.
When I am watching pictures fullscreen (F11), and the button-bar on top starts fading out, the whole screen starts to flicker (black-picture-black-etc), at about the vertical refresh frequency. Running Desktop Effects and my LSPCI output:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 03)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Furthermore, I am using the i810 driver for x, and not the newer(?) intel driver, since that one is extremely buggy.

Thank you for your bug. Do you use the desktop effects option? Does it happen without it?

(I reported this in bug #150106, didn't notice it was a duplicate of this)

Same here too, using ATI 9600XT with -ati free driver and Compiz (which works ok).

Only happens with Compiz (i.e. using Normal or Extra effects). Without effects, EOG in full screen and slideshow modes does not flashes and works ok.

The flashing looks like a lot of redraws of the screen (and rectangular portions of it) while EOG is trying to hide the menu bar. Seems as if the window manager (Compiz) and EOG where contending for the screen.

I think it didn't happen in Gutsy alphas, with or without Compiz.

Just noticed that after opening a .doc document with OO.o Writer, the flashing of EOG in fullscreen does not happen and all is well. After closing Writer the flashing stills not happens. If I reboot and use EOG in fullscreen, the flashing is back. Curious!

Also I forgot to say I'm running Gutsy beta fully up to date.

Sebastian, to answer your question: I had desktop effects turned on. However, I just updated again, saw a few package updates with "xorg" in the name being installed, and now the problem seems to be gone. Without desktop effects on, the problem occurs neither - but that's no surprise since this bug seems to be fixed...?
I'll reboot the system to see if the problem is really gone.

I rebooted my machine, and alas, the problem is still there; so sorry about my preceding message.
I tried it with Desktop Effects turned off, and then there's no flickering anymore on fullscreen view with EOG.
I guess the flickering must compiz related.

Furthermore: When Totem Movieplayer is put to fullscreen, this problem also occurs. But there's a difference with EOG now: the moment the button bars are finished fading out, the flickering stops and it is possible to watch movie fairly normal - just until you hit the mouse/touchpad and the bars start fading/flickering-in.

Just a crazy idea. Could this be related to bug #147943? There the bottom panel gets hidden by Compiz, here the menu bar gets hidden by EOG, then shown by Compiz, then hidden again by EOG... and thus the flashing. Hmm, no, it would stay hidden. Must be other thing. Anyway, who knows.

Just another "me too". This is on nvidia hardware with the closed drivers (I know no support etc.)
I have the feeling it starts with the topbar of EOG moving to the background to show the full image.

The flashing doesn't start until after a few seconds. (when the bar should disappear)

Some more info : I am using cube rotate blur and showdesktop with compiz.
removing them doesn't help.

Same for me using Nvidia 6200A with closed drivers. I also believe it to happen when the panel at the top should disappear to show the whole image. Only happens with Compiz effects enabled.

I may have found a workaround??

I found that if in the CompizConfig settings manager under General Options I unmarked the option " Unredirect fullscreen windows"
The flashing does not happen anymore....

Just as a note (from my duplicate bug report #156593): the toolbar (buttonbar, topbar) doesn't disappear at all. After the flickering stops the toolbar is still visible.

Just a note about the workaround: CompizConfig is not installed by default, and in which package is it in? gnome-compiz-manager or compizconfig-settings-manager? They are both not supported (eg, they don't have the Ubuntu logo in Synaptic)
