Bug Description

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet

Clean install from daily build Sep 26.

When switching TO a user that have desktop effects (normal) enabled I get a blank screen with only the mouse pointer visable (have to ctrl-alt-backspace to get back).
It does not happen when I turn off desktop effects.

I have a Intel E6400 and a Nvidia 7600GT card.

Please let me know if you need more info.

Thanks,

Nicklas Svanteson

I have the same behavior with a GeForce4 MX 440. My behavior is different from bug #112518, as I get a white screen, and blind typing passwords correctly brings up the desktop of the target user.

Bug #145208 marked as duplicate. gdm, x.org conf files are attached there if this helps.

after you get the white screen once, it happens also when logging off one of the users. one interesting thing might be, that before getting the white screen the first time, the nvidia splash screen pops up. but it might be as well that i m not fast enough to see it the subsequent times.

Also on Hardy 8.04 beta (5 days before release):

When switching back to user I see a blank white screen, but actually it is locked:
Moving the mouse around I can see the mouse is changing apperarance then I move over the (hidden) textfield to type in the password.
If I type in the password the screen unlocks and everything is OK.

I can also confirm this is on Hardy.

I can also confirm this running Hardy using Desktop Effects (Compiz). My graphicscard is a Geforce 8800GT.

I am running the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver and when I am using the 'extra' visualization I recieve the blind white screen as described. When I am running the 'normal' visualization I receive a black screen for about a second then the blind white screen. Under both situations I am able to type the user password and switch profiles successfully. Only when I am using the 'none' visualization am I prompted with the login screen correctly.

Confirming on nvidia 7300GT. it looks like an nvidia driver bug, but someone at bug #112518 mentioned that it can be worked around from compiz. I hope that's true :)

There is a somewhat easy fix for this, enter in a terminal "sudo killall compiz", then enter your password. I have a keyboard shortcut for open terminal, so I just press it and kill compiz and the screen is then back. Compiz will automatically reload itself so everything is back to normal after that command. This is a workaround of course, the fix would be for compiz codebase.

Using hardy, nvidia 8800 GTX, compiz, and binary drivers.
